NewJew Media Arts Showcase
A showcase of creative works from the NCJHS Media Arts 1 and 2 classes Themes represented in clips include: Etz Chaim: The Tree of Life, The Exodus from Egypt, the Shema, Joseph and his brothers, and Yetzirah, the World of Formation. Featuring the music of Rabbi Gershom Sizomu.

 



9th Grade Media Arts Rotation Showcase
A showcase of creative works from the NCJHS 9th Grade Jewish Civilization Media Arts Rotation. Themes and projects represented include: Yad B'Yad: Hand in Hand in Community, Betzelem Elohim: Creators of Images, Created in the Image, Medieval Chai-Ku Poetry Animation,and Vibe: Animating the Energy of the Shema. Featuring the music of Rabbi Gershom Sizomu.

 


The Bass Viol
"The Bass Viol" is an experimental film based on the story by the great Yiddish writer, I.L. Peretz. The entire NCJHS art department reached a new level of interdiscipinary collaboration on this project which weaved together the creative works produced by students in our visual and performing arts classes. Both the original text and our adaptation of it blend Jewish folklore, ceremony, magic, and illusions into a work of art that transcends the mundane, reaching for the mystical realm of the Divine.

 

Maccabees vs Jelly Donuts
Happy Hanukkah from the New Community Jewish High School Media Arts, Instrumental Ensemble, and Choir student artists and musicians! This collaborative project began with class discussions about the history, traditions, and modern celebration of Hanukkah and evolved into a short animation that seeks to commemorate the holiday with meaning, fun, and enough jelly to feed an army of Maccabees.

Annoying Orange Tu B'Shvat
The NCJHS SAFES Club (Students Alliance for Environmental Sustainability) and NCJHS Media Arts 2 students under the direction of Roger Blonder created this Tu B'Shevat homage to the virally famous Annoying Orange. Banana Tu B'Shevat info from Hazon.org.

A Jewish mystical exploration of the numbers 3 and 7 as they relate to the life of student animator Josh Kosof.

 

 

 

Between Two Worlds
Each year, the NCJHS Art Department collaborates on a departmental theme. One year we studied the life and work of Yiddish author, playwright, and ethnographer. S. Ansky, best known for his play, The Dybbuk, Between Two Worlds. Media Arts students were challenged to connect their lives to some aspect of the 1939 Yiddish Film adaptation of the Dybbuk. Student Eli Zaga composited the viral Peanut Butter Jelly dancing banana into clips from the film. Although his intention, like many teenage boys, was simply to have some fun, he approached the work with sincerity and depth and, in so doing, created a mystical conversation across time; Between Two Worlds.

Animated Gravestones
A collaboration between NCJHS 2D Visual Arts and Media Arts courses exploring the art and symbolism of Jewish gravestones. The work of over 30 students is represented in this piece. Final edit by Director of Media Arts, Roger Blonder. Opening music by Michael Alpert and Stuart Brotman (Dos Oyfkumen - The Upward Flight). Additional music clips by Golem Klezmerke and Bublichki.



Vayl Ikh Bin a Yidele
A music video to the song Vayl Ikh Bin a Yidele (Because I Am a Little Jew) by Adrienne Cooper and Zalman Mlotek from the album Ghetto Tango, Music composed by Yankele Hershkowitz. Motion design and editing students David Weingarten, Aaron Schwartz and Harrison Rappaport.

 

 

Ezer Kenegdo: A Helper Against Him
In Bereishit (Genesis), Eve is said to have been created as Adam's "Ezer Kenegdo" - literally translated as a "helper against him". Students explored this textual concept in their Judaic studies classes and animated their interpretations in Media Arts.
